November 2007 Concert

On Saturday 10 November Sandbach Voices, directed by Martin Cook filled Sandbach Town Hall with their first concert in their 60th year, a triple bill beginning with Durufle's haunting beautiful “Requiem”, followed by Mozart's “Coronation Mass and concluding with Ramirez's “Misa Criolla”, a piece specially chosen to emphasise the energy and enthusiasm of the choir. The audience were immensely appreciative of the well known Steven Newlove's delivery of the Tenor soloist part in the Misa Criolla which combined with the string ensemble left everyone spellbound.

Conductor, Martin Cook soloist's proved to be a good choice. Tenor, Stephen Newlove began his musical training as a chorister at Beverley Minister. Since then he has moved across the Pennines and is currently Director of Music at Carmel Sixth Form College in St. Helens. Stephen has broadcast on radio and television and is a member of the Britten Singers.

Baritone David Hay gave a brilliant performance of Durufle's Requiem. David has sung with the Sandbach Voices on previous occasions and is a founder member of the Rivendell Singers, with whom he has sung for 25 years.

Both of the lady soloists were roundly applauded for their sensitive and charming interpretations of the music of Durufle and Mozart.

Suzanne Winter (Soprano) was brought up in Alsager and is well known to Sandbach Voices. Her repertoire extends from oratorio to opera and recital programmes. She recently delighted a local audience with a programme of songs based on a theme from Strauss and Gershwin.

Isobel Skelhorn (Alto) began her singing career as a chorister with Stockport Maia choir and now sings with the Amici chamber choir. Isobel teaches music in Sandbach and is making her first appearance with Sandbach Voices.

The Choirs next performance is a Christmas Concert in St. Mary’s Church, Sandbach on Saturday 8th December at 7.30 pm. Tickets and further information may be obtained from the secretary on 01270 841727.
